IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 23, 2016 – Surrey, BC
SkyTrain for Surrey is demonstrating its widespread support in the South of Fraser today by presenting a 1300-signature petition, calling for extending SkyTrain in Surrey and Langley instead of the currently proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, to the TransLink Board of Directors.
The full petition package being submitted to decision makers today includes all signatures, signer comments, and a list of 15 major issues the organization has identified with the LRT proposal. Many of these issues were identified during the preliminary Surrey Rapid Transit Study analysis in 2012, in which a negative business case result was found for the since regionally-endorsed LRT.
SkyTrain for Surrey is asking TransLink and all involved parties to seriously consider these issues during the current business case development process, and is expecting that the Regional Mayors’ Council will be advised to change the regional transit vision as necessary if the current analysis also results in a negative business case for LRT.
Since our formation in 2012 by transit issues advocate Daryl Dela Cruz, SkyTrain for Surrey has pushed SkyTrain on a platform oriented around raising major issues with the proposed LRT system. With the recent media confirmation that a business case for a SkyTrain alternative is being completed alongside a business case for the proposed LRT, we are pleased to continue our campaign activities, which include addressing continued misinformation from LRT support groups. SkyTrain for Surrey operates the campaign website and online petition at skytrainforsurrey.org.
Our campaign chair, Daryl Dela Cruz, spoke to the TransLink board at today’s Annual General Meeting to both present our petition as well as call for a fair process in developing the upcoming SkyTrain and LRT business cases.
