SkyTrain for Surrey, not LRT!

SkyTrain advocates applaud BC Conservative commitment to building a King George Boulevard SkyTrain

MEDIA RELEASE October 3, 2024・Surrey, BC

SkyTrain for Surrey, the community organization central to early advocacy for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project, applauds the BC Conservative Party’s election commitment to building a King George Boulevard SkyTrain line to Surrey’s Newton Town Centre. We are also pleased that the BC Conservatives have clearly indicated that they will build SkyTrain to Newton, and not light rail transit on the surface.

Newton Town Centre and Semiahmoo Town Centre (South Surrey) are two large town centres in Surrey that are not yet served by any SkyTrain line. A line on King George Boulevard could eventually extend to reach both of these thriving town centres, among the fastest-growing in the region and home to hundreds of thousands of people needing high-quality connections to get to school and work.

“SkyTrain to Langley City and Newton, and eventually also to Guildford and to Scott Road, are needed to bring Surrey and Langley in line with the rest of the region on rapid transit access."

In 2021, SkyTrain for Surrey issued a call for significant expansion of the SkyTrain system South of the Fraser, delivering more parity with proposed expansion North of the Fraser such as to UBC and the North Shore:

  • A new Second SkyBridge over the Fraser River
    • Offering redundancy with the existing SkyBridge, and
    • Providing a new connection for Surrey, Langley and Delta residents to the Millennium Line and UBC.
  • A total of 50 kilometres of new SkyTrain expansion in Surrey, Langley and Delta along three ‘spine’ corridors:
    • King George Blvd. from Surrey City Centre to South Surrey (22 km)
    • 104 Avenue and Highway 1 from Sapperton to Carvolth Exchange via Skybridge 2 (20km)
    • Scott Road, from Scott Road Station to Scottsdale at 72 St (8 km)
  • A commitment to delivering the full King George Blvd. SkyTrain extension (City Centre to South Surrey) before 2050
  • A commitment to eventually deliver all of these corridors as fully grade-separated rapid transit lines (above or below grade)

About SkyTrain for Surrey

SkyTrain for Surrey is the community organization that advocated for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension (SLS). From our beginnings as a petition calling for the scrapping of a street-level LRT proposal, we grew into a community of like-minded folk, taking on various projects such as making SkyTrain an election issue in 2018 as a registered advocacy group. Today we are pushing for the construction of the SLS as well as the King George SkyTrain extension (KGS).
