SkyTrain for Surrey, not LRT!

MEDIA RELEASE

Surrey-Langley SkyTrain highly supported in Metro Vancouver region

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 10, 2019 – Surrey, BC

SkyTrain for Surrey welcomes the results of a new poll released by Mustel Group indicating high levels of support for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain across the entire Metro Vancouver Region, and urges funding and delivery partners to take note of these results.

In the poll, respondents were asked to rate a list of projects being considered in the regional 10-year-vision as either “excellent”, “good”, “not so good” or “poor”. A full 47% of survey respondents said that an extension of SkyTrain in Surrey down Fraser Highway to Langley is an “excellent” idea—the highest percentage of “excellent” ratings among the listed transit projects.

In addition, 36% gave the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain as a “good” rating; in total, 83% of respondents rated the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain as an “excellent” or “good” idea. High levels of support were also recorded for other regional transit projects such as the proposed SkyTrain to UBC, new B-Line buses, and the proposed Burnaby Mountain/SFU Gondola.

Only 2% of respondents suggested that light rail options be considered for regional rapid transit projects.

“SkyTrain runs over 96% on-time and has an impeccable track record of spurring economic development. It’s clear why stakeholders across the region have identified SkyTrain as the rapid transit system of choice and see its immediate expansion as a high priority,” says Daryl Dela Cruz, founder of SkyTrain for Surrey.

The poll, which was released by the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation, is also part of their Cure Congestion campaign urging for sustainable long-term transit funding through a national Congestion Relief Fund. We support the introduction of such a fund, to ensure that transit expansion demands in South-of-Fraser cities are met now and in the future.

Future riders in Surrey, Langley and across the region are ready and willing to take SkyTrain on Fraser Highway when it comes, and SkyTrain for Surrey is proud to have played a significant role in building public support for the SkyTrain extension that is now becoming a reality.

About SkyTrain for Surrey

SkyTrain for Surrey is the community organization that advocated for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension, and continues to push for high-quality rapid transit projects in Surrey and Langley. We began as a petition calling for the scrapping of a street-level LRT proposal, which eventually amassed more than 6,000 signatures, and later contributed to making SkyTrain an election issue as a registered third-party advertiser. SkyTrain for Surrey continues to call for high-quality projects that offer a positive return-on-investment and recognize the rapidly increasing demand for transit.
