SkyTrain for Surrey’s founding director Daryl Dela Cruz is urging for a more fair debate on issues with the proposed Surrey Light Rail Transit system, in light of a recent viewpoint published by The Now Newspaper that discourages the continuation of the debate our organization is moving.
In Daryl’s response to the viewpoint article, which argues that the controversial “SkyTrain vs. LRT” debate in Surrey is over because the elected Surrey First party in City Council is favouring LRT, Daryl notes that there were several things missed by The Now Newspaper writers:
- Voters in the 2014 elections could not choose a major party opposing LRT,
- Transportation was not the defining issue of the 2014 elections,
- The previous Surrey Rapid Transit Study concluded LRT was not the best option,
- Grassroots advocacy has shaped transit planning choices in this region,
- Grassroots advocates of Light Rail technology were never discouraged as such by media.
As of this release, over 1100 supporters have joined SkyTrain for Surrey in opposing proposed Light Rail in Surrey, urging that it be changed to a SkyTrain system with Bus Rapid Transit instead.
